Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (6-5, 3.80 ERA)

Fister escaped with a no-decision Tuesday despite six runs in his first two innings, but he didn't feel fortunate at all. Still, it might have been karma for the many starts this season in which run support was scarce.

Indians: RHP Corey Kluber (6-5, 4.33 ERA)

Kluber gave up four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision against KC last Tuesday. The righty is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in his last two outings after going 4-2 with a 2.77 ERA in his previous eight turns.

PREVIEW

Tigers, Indians heading in opposite directions
Fister to duel with Kluber as Detroit aims to keep widening division lead

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 7/6/2013 8:45 PM ET

The Tigers matched a season-long five-game winning streak with Saturday's 9-4 win against the Indians, a team they've beat seven straight times. Not only has Detroit stretched its lead in the American League Central to 3 1/2 games, but the club has also improved to .500 (22-22) on the road.

Meanwhile, Cleveland will hope to end its four-game skid when Corey Kluber takes the mound opposite Doug Fister on Sunday afternoon. Kluber retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced in his last start, before ultimately leaving after giving up a grand slam in the fifth inning. He's 1-3 with a 7.88 ERA in his five career outings against the Tigers.

"I thought Corey was extremely aggressive and crisp," said Indians manager Terry Francona after Kluber's start against the Tigers on May 21, when Kluber allowed three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. "He's learning quickly. I think he's confident.

Fister struggled early in his last start, allowing six earned runs in the first two innings, before settling down to pitch four more scoreless innings. Although it wasn't a strong outing, he was able to get enough run support for a no-decision. It may be a change of fortune for Fister, as the offense had only scored 10 runs for him in his last seven starts before Tuesday.

"It's still a nothing-nothing ballgame in my mind," Fister said of pitching with the substantial deficit. "Going out there, you're still throwing the same pitches and trying to get outs."

In 12 starts against the Tribe, Fister is 5-3 with a 2.24 ERA, including 64 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings.

Indians: Vizquel enjoying retirement
Omar Vizquel didn't begin or end his career with the Indians. He hasn't played for Cleveland since 2004. The 11-time Gold Glove winner, however, says he'll always have a fondness for his former team.

"To this day, fans really treat me very, very special," Vizquel said. "I have a Twitter account on my phone, and most of the people that follow me are from Cleveland."

Vizquel threw the ceremonial first pitch on Saturday, before the Indians' bobblehead giveaway on Monday bearing his likeness.

"Bobbleheads are strange," Vizquel said. "This is my fifth bobblehead right now, and none of them look like me."

Tigers: Infante still recovering from injuries
Although Omar Infante was hoping to play by the series finale against the Indians on Monday, progress has been slow at this point.

Infante is recovering from a couple of leg injuries that resulted from a hard slide by Colby Rasmus on Wednesday. Infante says his shin is OK, but his ankle is still holding him back from participating in batting practice or hitting off of a tee.

Worth noting
• Cleveland's Ryan Raburn now has three home runs against his former team after his two-run homer in the ninth inning on Saturday. It's the most dingers he's hit against any other team this season.

• The Indians' Jason Kipnis didn't reach base on Saturday, snapping a 16-game hitting streak and 36-game on-base streak.
