Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Game Time - 7:15 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (13-0, 3.06 ERA)

Scherzer's next shot at matching Roger Clemens' 14-0 start from 1986 comes against a Rangers squad that has never beaten him in the regular season. He's 4-0 with a 3.35 ERA against Texas in seven career meetings, none this year.

Rangers: LHP Derek Holland (7-4, 3.19 ERA)

Holland beat the Orioles on Monday despite allowing five runs -- three earned -- in 6 2/3 innings. He is 2-0 with a 2.07 ERA in his last three starts but 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA in seven starts since the beginning of June.

PREVIEW

Scherzer can make history with 14-0 start
A win over Rangers, Holland would give righty unique status

By Master Tesfatsion / MLB.com | 7/12/2013 10:50 PM ET

Max Scherzer has a chance to rewrite the record book on Saturday.

Scherzer will become the first pitcher in Major League history to go into the All-Star break 14-0 with a win over the Rangers at Comerica Park. There have been 66 pitchers with 14 or more wins before the break, but they all had at least one loss, according to STATS. Dave McNally went 13-0 before the break in 1969 in 24 starts with the Orioles.

At 14-0, Scherzer would also match Roger Clemens' 14-0 start in 1986 with the Red Sox. A win or no-decision would tie Scherzer for the second-longest unbeaten streak by a Major League starter with Johnny Allen in 1937 with the Indians and Rick Rhoden in 1976 with the Dodgers.

"[Scherzer] can sink it, he has a slider and he throws hard," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He's got a tremendous slider and a turbo sinker. He works fast and throws strikes."

History bodes well for Scherzer against Texas, as he has the most wins of any active pitcher without a loss against the Rangers in the regular season. He's 4-0 with a 3.35 ERA in seven career starts against them.

"They always grind out at-bats against you and really make you work," Scherzer said. "For me, I know I have to bring my 'A' game against them. They're talented from top to bottom. They do a really good job with speed and power -- speed at the top of the lineup, power in the middle of the lineup. Offseason acquisitions they made, plus some young guys they brought up, they're really a quality team."

The Rangers won both games in the 2011 American League Championship Series against Scherzer, who went 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in the series. He faced Saturday's starter, Derek Holland, in both games. Holland posted an 8.59 ERA in the series. Holland will make his first career start at Comerica Park.

"For me, the main thing is they are one of the best ballclubs in the league," Holland said. "I've got to match Scherzer pitch for pitch. He's 13-0 for a reason, so I have to do everything I can to match him."

Holland lasted just 4 2/3 innings in his only start against the Tigers this season. He gave up four runs on eight hits, allowing two home runs to Miguel Cabrera.

"I have to shut down one of the best hitters in the game. I'm going to throw in the kitchen sink and bring everything I've got," Holland said. "The last time, he took care of me. This time, I have to take care of him. But I can't take for granted the rest of the lineup. They have some pretty good hitters."

Holland is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last three starts. He gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Orioles in his last start.

Rangers: Grimm exits with injury
The Rangers suffered another injury in their starting rotation on Friday. Justin Grimm left after allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings with right forearm soreness. He was removed from the game as a precautionary measure. The Rangers already have seven pitchers on the disabled list.

Tigers: Cabrera looks to make history
Scherzer isn't the only one on the Tigers having a historic first half. Cabrera picked up his 95th RBI in Friday's 7-2 win against the Rangers. He has two games left to become the third player ever to hit the century mark by the All-Star break. Hank Greenberg had 103 RBIs before the break in 1935 and Juan Gonzalez had 101 in 1998.

Cabrera became the first player in Major League history to have 30 home runs and 90 RBIs by the break, but Jimmie Foxx had 30 home runs and 93 RBIs by the 80-game mark in 1932 with the Philadelphia Athletics, a year before the first All-Star Game.

Worth noting
• Scherzer has a .279 opponents' batting average against the current Rangers' roster. A.J Pierzynski has a team-high 10 hits with a home run and five RBIs off the right-hander in 20 at-bats. Elvis Andrus is just 3-for-18.

• The Rangers' bullpen has allowed one run in 19 1/3 innings over the past six games. They've allowed seven hits, four walks and struck out 17 in that stretch.
