Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (6-6, 4.80 ERA)

Porcello has pitched three consecutive quality starts and hasn't given up more than two walks in a start this season. This will be his first start since serving a five-game suspension for plunking a batter with a pitch.

White Sox: LHP Hector Santiago (3-5, 3.30 ERA)

The White Sox decided to keep Santiago in the rotation and move Dylan Axelrod to the bullpen with Peavy's return. Santiago is 3-3 record with a 3.13 ERA over 12 starts, with 76 strikeouts in 69 innings, compared to 3.93 in 11 games as a reliever.

PREVIEW

With or without Miggy, Tigers press on in Chicago
Sore left hip flexor creates uncertainty; Porcello, Santiago square off

By Chad Thornburg / MLB.com | 7/23/2013 1:48 AM ET

The last series between the White Sox and Tigers saw both benches cleared, some hit batters and multiple ejections, but don't expect any bad blood between the American League Central foes in this week's series.

Chicago ace Chris Sale reached out to Tigers manager Jim Leyland at last week's All-Star Game in New York, a gesture Leyland, who also had Chicago manager Robin Ventura on his staff, appreciated.

But what could spell trouble for at least one player, however, is Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson facing left-handed pitchers.

Entering Monday's game against the lefty Sale, Jackson was batting just .159 against left-handers, compared with .306 versus righties. He went 0-for-4 with a strikeout against Sale before doubling home a run in the ninth against right-hander Ramon Troncoso.

Leyland said Jackson may get some extra work with hitting coach Lloyd McClendon and take batting practice from left-handed BP pitcher Ed Hodge.

"Overall, he's got to get it going. That's all," Leyland said. "And he'll get it going."

On Tuesday, Austin and the rest of the Tigers lineup will face lefty Hector Santiago and a White Sox club that Leyland thinks will heat up in the second half after entering the break as the American League Central's last-place team.

"Last year, things went so well. This is just the reality of it," Leyland said. "[Ventura is] already in the early stage of his managerial career and he's seen both sides of it. He hasn't panicked and he'll get them going and they'll play good the second half. He's smart. It's probably a good experience for him."

Right-hander Rick Porcello will get back on the mound for the Tigers after serving a five-game suspension for hitting Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist on June 30. The right-hander allowed three runs over six innings to defeat the White Sox on July 10 in Detroit.

Reigning American League MVP Miguel Cabrera's immediate future is uncertain after he aggravated his sore left hip flexor while running the bases in Monday's night's 7-3 victory over the White Sox. He will be evaluated on Tuesday and is listed as day to day.

"It felt weird," Cabrera said. "It felt real weird. That base hit that Victor [Martinez] had, I tried to pick it up a little bit from second to home. That's why I had to go out."

White Sox: Beckham inactive, hoping to avoid DL
For a second straight day, Gordon Beckham was absent from the White Sox lineup Monday after he strained a ligament in his left wrist while warming up for batting practice Friday.

Beckham is hoping to avoid another trip to the disabled list. The removal of a fractured hamate bone in his left hand landed him on the DL from April 12 to June 3, and he also sustained a left quad contusion in Philadelphia right before the All-Star break.

"Pretty frustrating. I've been unfortunate in a couple of different ways," Beckham said. "It is what it is. It's frustrating for me because if it was just this, I think I could be OK with it, but when you hurt yourself for two months and are finally starting to get comfortable back playing and for something to go wrong with your hand again, it kind of stings."

Tigers: Infante to likely miss Chicago series
Second baseman Omar Infante is unlikely to rejoin the Tigers for the four-game series in Chicago.

Infante sprained his ankle on a hard takeout slide by Toronto's Colby Rasmus earlier this month, but he has been running at half-speed, fielding ground balls laterally and taking batting practice, according to head athletic trainer Kevin Rand. A travel issue already set him back a day and Leyland said Monday that the Tigers had not scheduled any plans for a rehab outing.

Infante's prescence would have been a significant boost to the Tigers for a series in which they will face three lefties.

"We're hoping maybe we can get him out and have him ready for the weekend," Leyland said, "but that might be wishful thinking."

Worth noting
• Tigers relievers Drew Smyly, Bruce Rondon, Joaquin Benoit, Al Alburquerque and Phil Coke combined to toss 7 2/3 scoreless innings over the weekend against the Royals. Rondon balked in a run in the ninth inning on Monday.

• Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his return to the lineup Monday. Konerko had been on the disabled list since July 3 with a lower back strain.
