U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL
Game Time - 2:10 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (10-7, 3.69 ERA)

Verlander seeks revenge in Chicago after the White Sox roughed him up for five runs on 12 hits over seven innings on July 9 at Comerica Park. He hasn't lost at U.S. Cellular Field since 2008, going 5-0 there since.

White Sox: RHP Jake Peavy (7-4, 4.19 ERA)

Peavy returned Saturday after a fractured left rib kept him out six weeks. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits while fanning three and walking none, earning the win over Atlanta. He is 3-5 with a 4.80 ERA in 11 career starts against the Tigers.

PREVIEW

All eyes on Peavy in finale against Verlander
Trade candidate tries to stop Tigers from four-game sweep

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 7/25/2013 12:33 AM ET

As the Tigers try to sweep a four-game series from the White Sox after a 6-2 win Wednesday night, there will be a lot of attention on one of Thursday's starting pitchers. Surprisingly, that pitcher won't be Justin Verlander.

Jake Peavy will be making his second start since being activated from the 15-day disabled list last week. With at least 10 scouts already in attendance Wednesday, many of them on Thursday will be closely watching Peavy, who is a likely trade candidate for the White Sox.

"I mean, obviously they're a good lineup," Peavy said of the Tigers. "And you know that going in. It'll be a fun time."

One major piece of Detroit's lineup, Miguel Cabrera, sat out his second straight game on Wednesday to nurse a sore left hip flexor. It's the first time he's missed consecutive games since October 2010. Manager Jim Leyland said Cabrera is feeling better but nothing more.

Meanwhile, Verlander is looking to find his rhythm after giving up six runs (five earned) while walking four over 5 2/3 innings on Saturday against the Royals.

"Well, he's attacking guys," catcher Alex Avila said. "I think he just doesn't have his release point. At times, he knows where he wants to throw it, but it's just not going there at times. It's just a matter of finding it."

White Sox: Crain fine day after first bullpen session
Jesse Crain threw a 33-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday, marking the first time he'd thrown off a mound since going on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

"I felt OK," Crain said Wednesday. "Just a day-by-day thing. That's the only way I can take it ... see how I feel each day and go from there."

Crain, another trade candidate with a 0.74 ERA in 38 appearances, says he plans to play catch on Thursday, and if he feels good, then he'll throw off the mound again.

• Second baseman Gordon Beckham says his injured left wrist "felt better than it did" after taking flips prior to Wednesday's game.

Beckham strained a ligament swinging a weighted bat while warming up for batting practice on Friday.

"If it's worse tomorrow, then we'll have a better idea of what's going to happen," Beckham said. "If it's about the same, then we'll go from there."

Tigers: Jurrjens back with the Tigers
The Tigers signed right-hander Jair Jurrjens to a Triple-A contract on Wednesday, and he will report to Toledo on Friday.

Jurrjens went 3-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 2007 for Detroit before playing five seasons with the Braves and making two appearances with the Orioles this year.

Jurrjens sustained multiple injuries to his right knee in the past few years and was designated for assignment by the Orioles on July 12 before the club granted him free agency.

"He kind of came on the scene pretty good," manager Jim Leyland said of Jurrjens' 2007 season with the Tigers. "Pretty calm, pretty collected, made a good impression. Evidently, he's had a lot of health issues since we've had him."

• Omar Infante went 1-for-3 with a single as the designated hitter in his first rehab game at Class A West Michigan on Wednesday, although he left the game after being hit by a pitch on the shoulder in the ninth inning.

Infante has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 4 with a sprained ankle, and the Tigers are hoping he can join the team for the weekend series against the Phillies.

Worth noting
• The Tigers will be going for their first four-game sweep of the White Sox in Chicago since 1980.

• Verlander has dominated against Paul Konerko, holding the White Sox slugger to a .164 batting average in 55 career at-bats.
