Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (9-5, 3.67 ERA)

Fister gave up just three hits and one unearned run in eight innings against the Phillies. He's won three straight starts for the first time since the beginning of the season and has a 0.64 ERA following the All-Star break.

White Sox: LHP Hector Santiago (3-6, 3.33 ERA)

Santiago turned in another quality start with nothing to show for it, striking out seven and walking four over 6 2/3 innings, but finishing with a no-decision.

PREVIEW

After trade, Tigers to play host to White Sox
Three days after three-team deal, division rivals to square off

By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 8/1/2013 3:53 PM ET

Three days after setting aside their division rivalry to complete a three-team trade, the White Sox and Tigers will square off in a three-game set at Comerica Park beginning Friday.

Late Tuesday night, the White Sox sent veteran starter Jake Peavy to the Red Sox, who shipped rookie infielder Jose Iglesias to the Tigers and Minor Leaguers to the White Sox. Detroit also dealt promising young outfielder Avisail Garcia to Chicago.

With the non-waiver Trade Deadline having come and gone, the White Sox, losers of seven straight games, can exhale a bit. They scratched Peavy from his start on Tuesday and labeled him the probable pitcher for Wednesday before completing the swap just before midnight ET on Tuesday. On Monday, Chicago traded reliever Jesse Crain to the Rays. Three weeks ago, the club dealt southpaw Matt Thornton to Boston.

"It's tough. This is obviously not the position we want to be in right now," said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn.

Things might not quiet down for the Tigers, who have won five straight games, just yet.

Reports have indicated that players involved in the Biogenesis scandal could soon learn about potential suspensions, which could include shortstop Jhonny Peralta. General manager Dave Dombrowski admitted the addition of Iglesias reinforces the shortstop position should Peralta miss any time.

"He's a shortstop for the future of our organization," Dombrowski said of Iglesias. "Jhonny Peralta is our shortstop now. I know the natural question is, 'What does that mean for Peralta?' and right now, under these circumstances, the frank reality is I do not know.

"I also think that the more we talk about our scenario, if there's a lengthy suspension in which Jhonny does not play -- and I do not know where that stands -- we feel that we are now very protected with somebody we like a great deal."

Perhaps equally as troubling for Detroit is the status of reigning Most Valuable Player Miguel Cabrera. The third baseman sat out Wednesday's 11-1 win over the Nationals after exiting Tuesday's game after he aggravated a left abdominal strain. Cabrera said Wednesday he was feeling better than he did the previous night, and coupled with Thursday's off-day, he could be back in the lineup on Friday.

"It's the type of thing that's something he's going to feel, and as long as he's able to work through that, he's OK," head trainer Kevin Rand said. "If he can't, he'll take a breather."

Friday's series opener will pit Chicago's Hector Santiago (3-6, 3.33 ERA) against Detroit's Doug Fister (9-5, 3.67 ERA).

White Sox: Santiago seeking first win since June
The White Sox lost each of Santiago's five July starts, though not because of poor performances. The left-hander posted an 0-1 record and 2.78 ERA in his five outings and held opposing hitters to a .197 average. He tallied 34 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings. Chicago scratched across a total of nine runs in those five games. The White Sox are 3-11 in Santiago's 14 starts, but he's logged a 3.20 ERA in those outings.

Tigers: Fister eyeing 10th win
Fister can match his win total from last season with a victory on Friday night. The lanky right-hander has rattled off three straight wins, in which he has allowed only three earned runs over 20 innings (1.35 ERA). Last Friday, he held the Phillies to one unearned run on three hits and one walk over eight stellar innings.

"Everybody knows he's a workhorse in the second half, and [the outing] proves it," said Joaquin Benoit.

Worth noting
• The Tigers have won four of seven meetings with the White Sox this season.

• Paul Konerko, who has played in 10 games, all at designated hitter, since returning from a lower back strain, could return to first base this weekend. He's 9-for-36 since his return.
