Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (16-1, 2.85 ERA)

Scherzer is the second pitcher in the past 44 years to start a season with a 16-1 record. He has struck out at least five batters in all 22 starts this season, and owns a 0.83 ERA and 0.51 WHIP since the All-Star break.

Indians: RHP Zach McAllister (4-6, 3.47 ERA)

McAllister began his last start with five no-hit innings in Miami. In the sixth, he got one out while allowing two singles and a double, later earning a no-decision. In three starts since coming off the DL, he is 0-1 with a 3.63 ERA.

PREVIEW

Tigers go for sweep of Tribe behind Scherzer
Detroit looks to extend win streak to 12 games behind 16-game winner

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 8/8/2013 12:53 AM ET

After the Tigers extended their winning streak to 11 games with Wednesday's 6-5 win in 14 innings, they will go for their first four-game sweep against Cleveland since 1988 when they send Max Scherzer to the mound on Thursday.

Scherzer has been dominant in his last two starts, allowing four hits in 13 2/3 scoreless innings while walking three and striking out 13. Despite being only the second pitcher in the past 44 years to start a season with a 16-1 record, Scherzer doesn't give much consideration to the historical significance.

"No, because we're in a pennant chase," Scherzer said. "You know, we are in first place and we're trying to make the postseason, so really that stuff doesn't matter to me."

Scherzer is 2-0 in three starts this season against the Indians, with a 2.74 ERA.

"I'm a good pitcher," Scherzer said. "I can make good pitches in any situation. I'm always confident in myself and I always believe that I can be successful. It doesn't matter the game situation, I always believe I'm gonna come out on top."

Cleveland will send Zach McAllister, who allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings during a no-decision against the Tigers earlier this season, to the mound. He has struggled pitching deep into games, however, going more than 5 1/3 innings once in his past six starts.

"Things can happen quick here," McAllister said. "You leave some pitches up and big league hitters, good big league hitters at that, they can make you pay."

Indians: Kluber out for at least a month
After an impressive outing against the Tigers on Monday, the Indians announced on Wednesday that Corey Kluber will miss four-to-six weeks with a sprained right middle finger.

Kluber held Detroit to six hits and no runs in 7 1/3 innings in the series opener. An MRI confirmed a sprain, which will keep Kluber, who's on the 15-day disabled list, from throwing until his symptoms dissipate.

"It was kind of something weird," Kluber said. "I don't know how to describe what I felt. And then it just kind of got stiff, felt like it kind of filled up a little bit."

Danny Salazar, who struck out 10 in 7 2/3 innings on Wednesday, will fill Kluber's spot in the rotation.

• Ryan Raburn signed a two-year contract extension that includes an option for the 2016 season with the Indians on Wednesday. This season, Raburn is third on the team with 13 home runs while batting .274 with a .925 OPS.

Tigers: Cabrera reaches historic mark
Miguel Cabrera reached the 100-RBI mark for the 10th consecutive season on Tuesday, becoming just the sixth Major League player to match that streak .

Cabrera joined Albert Pujols, Jimmie Foxx, Alex Rodriguez, Al Simmons and Lou Gehrig as the only Major Leaguers in history with 10 straight 100-RBI seasons. Cabrera is only one of three players in history to post 100 RBIs in 10 of his first 11 seasons, joining Pujols and Rodriguez.

• The Tigers announced that they unconditionally released Jose Valverde from his Minor League contract on Wednesday, after he spent a little bit more than a month at Triple-A Toledo.

Valverde went 7-for-7 in save chances during his Minor League stint but had a 4.09 ERA in 11 appearances.

"I will always have great memories of him," manager Jim Leyland said. "He did a terrific job for us in this organization. I don't know what his plans are, but we certainly wish him the best. He was a terrific closer and a terrific teammate."

Worth noting
• Nick Swisher is 6-for-13 (.462) with three walks and four strikeouts in his career against Scherzer.

• The Indians are batting 4-for-26 (.154) with runners in scoring position in this series.
