PREVIEW

A-Rod returns to Bronx as Yankees host Tigers
Right-handers Porcello and Nova square off in Friday's series opener

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 8/8/2013 11:22 PM ET

Alex Rodriguez was showered with boos on the road, but he is finally returning home to Yankee Stadium on Friday night for a series against the Tigers. The last time Rodriguez faced Detroit, he struggled in the American League Championship Series last October.

"I am curious what it's going to be like Friday," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of A-Rod's first game in the Bronx since his 211-game suspension was announced. "I'm not sure. And I don't really know what the appropriate response is. I don't think it's my right to tell people how to respond to certain situations."

Rodriguez and the Yankees will face a Tigers club that has won 12 straight games. Rick Porcello, who has tossed six consecutive quality starts, will be on the hill for Detroit.

In three starts after the All-Star break, Porcello is 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA. He also hasn't walked more than two batters in 20 of his 21 outings this season.

"When you pitch to contact, you have to keep runners off base any way you can, and not give them any walks," Porcello said. "I take pride in not giving up many of them, and get pretty frustrated when I do give up some walks. Trying to keep those at a minimum is definitely big for me being successful out there."

Ivan Nova will take the mound for the Yankees. He has a streak of five straight quality starts dating back to July 5 and threw seven shutout innings against the Padres in his last start while striking out eight.

"I've been feeling really good," Nova said. "Like I've said in the past, I don't remember the last time I felt the way I feel now. I'm working hard to try to repeat it every time. I'm trying to go out there and do my job, try to help the team to win games."

Tigers: Leyland to meet with Berra
• During the Tigers weekend series with the Yankees, manager Jim Leyland plans to have dinner with Yogi Berra.

Idolizing the former Yankee great, the two began a friendship when Leyland broke into the Major League managerial ranks in Pittsburgh. At that time, Berra was a bench coach for Houston.

"He's something else. I just think the world of him," Leyland said. "He's really become a good friend. He always comes see me when we come to Yankee Stadium."

Yankees: Soriano adjusting to AL pitchers
• After spending 7 1/2 seasons in the National League, Alfonso Soriano is still adjusting to pitchers he isn't familiar with.

"(i) more to the pitchers that are brand new [to me]," Soriano said. "I know we played Interleague [games], but most of the [AL] pitchers, I don't know those guys, so I have to make adjustments with those pitchers."

Soriano is batting .244 with two home runs and six RBIs in 11 games with the Yankees after going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer on Wednesday.

"Maybe if I [see] a couple pitches, maybe five or six pitches, I'm more comfortable," Soriano added. "The more pitches I see, I feel more comfortable."

Worth noting
• Soriano is one hit away from becoming the 16th active player to reach the 2,000 career hit plateau.

• In four career appearances and three starts against the Tigers, Nova is 0-2 with an 8.83 ERA.

• The last time the Tigers won 12 straight games was from Sept. 2-14, 2011.
