Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (12-8, 3.50 ERA)

It appears that vintage Verlander has returned. He hit 100 mph twice over his eight-inning gem at Cleveland on Tuesday, but more important, he threw in the mid-90s and up with command for the first time this season.

Yankees: LHP Andy Pettitte (7-9, 4.71 ERA)

Pettitte is coming off a rough outing against the White Sox, against whom he gave up seven runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings. The veteran left-hander is 10-9 with a 3.66 career ERA in 23 lifetime starts against the Tigers.

PREVIEW

Tigers look to get on another roll behind Verlander
In rubber match, Yanks send Pettitte to face former Cy Young, MVP

By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 8/10/2013 4:42 PM ET

So, the Yankees halted Detroit's 12-game winning streak on Friday night. The Tigers will simply try to start a new streak.

Detroit topped New York, 9-3, on Saturday, and in Sunday's series finale, the American League Central leaders will send former AL Cy Young winner and Most Valuable Player Justin Verlander to the mound.

For most of the season, however, Verlander (12-8, 3.50 ERA) hasn't been as imposing as usual atop the hill. His last time out, however, he looked like his old self, hitting 100 mph on his fastball while throwing his curveball for a strike in holding the Indians to one run on four hits over eight innings.

Is Verlander back to form?

"I think you have to wait and see," said pitching coach Jeff Jones. "In the back of my mind, I'm hoping, but to me, you have to keep going out there every time and doing it. But I think he's happy where he's at and I think he's obviously really looking forward to his next start."

Verlander's struggles haven't been for a lack of trying.

"I don't know if my arm can take any more throwing than I've put on it," he said.

Verlander's ERA is the highest he has posted in a season since 2008, when he went 11-17 with a 4.84 ERA. He said he learned plenty of lessons that season that helped him mature as a pitcher. He added that his numbers this year are not all that disturbing; they just appear that way given the high standards he has set.

"I've got a mid-3 ERA and it's a disastrous year," Verlander said. "I mean, [dang], if this is my disastrous year, then I've done a pretty good job at it. ... I created it, and I'm OK with that. Nobody puts more pressure on themselves to succeed than I do -- the fans, the media, anybody. I put those expectations on myself, so I don't care what expectations the world has on me."

On Sunday, Verlander will encounter a Yankees lineup that has been undermanned all season. It could, however, include Alex Rodriguez, who made his 2013 Yankee Stadium debut on Friday, but rested on Saturday. Rodriguez said he is still rounding into playing shape.

Rodriguez was impressed by Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, who clubbed a game-tying homer in the ninth inning on Friday and swatted another long ball on Saturday. Cabrera's blast on Friday off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera came after he fouled a pair of pitches off his leg.

"That guy, he's amazing," Rodriguez said. "That was a joke. Everyone thought he was dead. It was like the movies, you've got to shoot him to make sure he's dead. I knew he wasn't coming out of the game. I said, 'Don't fall for that bait of limping around.' He's a dangerous guy."

Southpaw Andy Pettitte (7-9, 4.71 ERA) is slated to start for the Yankees. The 41-year-old is coming off his poorest showing of the season. He surrendered seven runs on 11 hits in only 2 2/3 innings against the White Sox on Monday.

Yankees: A-Rod pleased by fan response
Rodriguez said the reaction from the fans in New York was "so much better than I ever even dreamed of."

"It was awesome. It was just an amazing experience," he said. "The fans were incredible. Such great energy. Such a great response. It was pretty overwhelming. I was having a hard time keeping my emotions in check."

Rodriguez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Friday.

"I think obviously after 10 or 12 games, I'll get a better feel for where I'm at," Rodriguez said. "The big thing for me is getting my legs under me. I remember the first, second and third game in Chicago, my legs were not under me."

Tigers: Jones working with Verlander
Jones has been impressed by Verlander's diligence as the pitcher continues to find his stride. Verlander is allowing 8.9 hits per nine innings, his highest total since his rookie campaign in 2006.

"He's worked extremely hard," Jones said. "We spent a lot of time looking at stuff in the video room. We made some mechanical adjustments. Sometimes guys get into bad habits and they just don't realize one little thing affects so many other things in a pitching delivery -- not that he hasn't worked at it and looked. We both have. We made some adjustments on some things, and some of the stuff we've done really hasn't worked. But I think he's definitely on the right track."

Worth noting
• The Tigers outhit the Yankees, 17-6, on Saturday.

• Cabrera is batting .400 (12-for-30) during an eight-game hitting streak.
