Detroit Tigers AT Chicago White Sox
Monday, August 12, 2013
U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL
Game Time - 8:10 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (10-5, 3.50 ERA)

Fister's eight-game unbeaten streak includes a 2-1 pitchers' duel victory over the White Sox on Aug. 2 with eight innings of one-run ball. He's 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA in three career starts at U.S. Cellular Field, none this year.

White Sox: LHP Chris Sale (7-11, 2.77 ERA)

Here's a news flash for the 2013 season: In his last start the White Sox ace got enough run support to pick up a victory. Sale has a 2-9 record over his last 12 starts but also has a 3.06 ERA over that stretch to go with 100 K's over 85 1/3 innings.

PREVIEW

Tigers aim to step back on throttle in Chicago
Fister, Sale match up in series opener at U.S. Cellular Field

By Michael Periatt / MLB.com | 8/11/2013 7:36 PM ET

The White Sox were no match for the surging Tigers when the two teams met in the beginning of August.

Detroit swept the three-game series as part of its stretch of 17 wins in 20 games. Less than two weeks later, the division foes will square off again for another three-game set starting Monday.

The two teams will meet in Chicago with very different mindsets. At 69-47, the Tigers own one of the best records in baseball. With a seven-game lead in the American League Central, they are also gearing up for a playoff run.

At the bottom of those standings are the White Sox, who trail only the Astros for the worst record in the AL. Just a year ago, Chicago was competing with the Tigers for the division crown, but much has changed in a year as the team is clearly in a rebuilding stage.

"That's just baseball," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "You have to be able to persevere through it and that's what we're in the process of doing."

After winning 12 straight games, the Tigers endured a setback against the Yankees, losing two of three.

They'll send Doug Fister to the mound on Monday night to get them on track. The right-hander is unbeaten in his last eight starts and has won each of his last four decisions. In his last outing, he held the Indians to two runs over six innings.

He'll have a tough challenge on Monday, though. All-Star left-hander Chris Sale is slated to start for the White Sox.

His 7-11 record doesn't show it, but Sale has been among the best pitchers in the Majors this season. He pitched 7 1/3 innings and earned the win in his last outing against the Yankees, lowering his ERA to 2.77.

His success might not be contributing to a playoff run, but the lefty says he's still learning some valuable lessons.

"Every situation you're in is a learning experience: Good, bad or indifferent," Sale said. "Each outing, you learn something, and I learned a lot last year having success and facing some adversity this year. You take the good with the bad through it all."

Tigers: Cabrera tears up Yankees
The Yankees took two of three from the Tigers over the weekend, but third baseman Miguel Cabrera might not be thrilled to leave New York.

He homered in each of the three games, including two off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, to go along with five RBIs and four runs.

For the most part, the Detroit slugger has had his way with Yankees pitching this season, hitting .500 with three home runs, seven RBIs and a double in six games.

In his career, he's hitting .373 against New York with 18 home runs, 44 RBIs, 11 doubles and a triple in 45 games.

White Sox: Beckham returns to No. 2 hole
Gordon Beckham went 0-for-4 as he returned to his customary spot in the No. 2 hole of the White Sox lineup Sunday, one day after batting leadoff for just the fifth time in his career.

With the White Sox out of the playoff picture in 2013, Ventura said he has a little more freedom to experiment with different lineups. Ventura said Beckham, who is hitting .299 on the year, has the makeup of a quality No. 2 hitter, but his versatile offensive game makes him an option throughout the top of the order.

"He can bat pretty much anywhere in the lineup," said Ventura. "The other day, he was fifth. The way he's been swinging, he can pretty much go anywhere."

Worth noting
• The Tigers rank second in the AL in runs scored (598) this season. The White Sox (425) rank last.

• Chicago's Alexei Ramirez extended his hitting streak to eight games Sunday after going 1-for-4. Since the streak began, he's gone 15-for-38 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
