Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (17-1, 2.84 ERA)

The owner of the best one-loss record since Roger Clemens in 2001 has a chance to improve it against a White Sox team he has beaten twice in the last three weeks, including 7 2/3 scoreless innings August 3 at Comerica Park.

White Sox: LHP Hector Santiago (3-7, 3.43 ERA)

The southpaw will be in search of his first victory since June 21 when he takes the mound against Detroit. Santiago threw 100 pitches over 5 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Yankees, giving up two HRs among seven hits and four runs, with five K's.

PREVIEW

Scherzer takes aim at win No. 18 on South Side
Righty 2-0 against White Sox this season; Santiago 0-2 vs. Tigers

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 8/12/2013 11:38 PM ET

The Tigers have found wins hard to come by in the past few days after dropping three of four to the Yankees and White Sox. However, Detroit will send Max Scherzer, who has more wins than any other pitcher in baseball, to the mound on Tuesday

Scherzer is looking to become the first pitcher to begin a season with an 18-1 record since Roger Clemens started 20-1 with the Yankees in 2001. While Scherzer's win-loss record puts him in elite company, he's quick to say it's not his mark to claim.

"It's not so much my achievement. It's a team achievement," Scherzer said. "If I'm going to sit here and take credit for these wins and say I'm the reason why we're winning, I'd be pretty naive."

Scherzer has faced the White Sox twice in his last four starts, allowing two runs on seven hits in 15 2/3 innings while striking out 11 and going 2-0.

Meanwhile, White Sox starter Hector Santiago is trying to make his case to be in the club's 2014 rotation. He's winless since June 21, and took losses in two recent starts against Detroit, allowing eight runs (five earned) and striking out 13 in 13 innings.

Although the White Sox have struggled throughout the season and have fallen deep into the American League Central standings, they still believe they can have a hand in affecting teams' postseason hopes.

"It's OK to want to spoil some people," White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham said before his team earned a 6-2 win over the Tigers on Monday night. "The Royals seemed to beat us every time last year that we were in the race. We want to go out there. I don't know the standings right now, but we want to play good baseball."

Tigers: Infante returns from DL
While Omar Infante's previously sprained left ankle may have taken more time to heal than initially hoped, he returned to the lineup on Monday for his first game since July 3.

Infante went 0-for-4 in his first game back, after going 4-for-19 at Triple-A Toledo during his rehab assignment. In order to make room for Infante, the Tigers optioned Hernan Perez, whom they believe has a bright future, to Toledo.

"I think Perez has a chance to be a really good Major League player and a really good offensive player, as well as defense," manager Jim Leyland said. "I think he's got a chance to be a real good all-around player."

White Sox: Garcia happy to see his former team
• Avisail Garcia had nothing but good things to say about facing his former team for the first time since being dealt in a three-team trade involving both teams and the Red Sox.

"I think it's really good because I have a good opportunity here to play every day," Garcia said. "Show what I got. See what happens. It takes time."

Garcia played 65 games with the Tigers over the past two seasons, including 12 postseason games last year. Garcia was called up to the White Sox on Friday following the trade of Alex Rios. He went 0-for-4 on Monday.

• Dayan Viciedo hopes to return to the lineup in the next day or two after an MRI taken on his jammed left thumb came back negative. Viciedo was able to move his tightly wrapped thumb without much pain on Monday.

Worth noting
• Miguel Cabrera has homered in four consecutive games, tying his career-best streak, which he has accomplished twice, including earlier this season.

• Alexei Ramirez owns a nine-game hitting streak, batting .381 with two home runs and eight RBIs in that span.
