Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (9-7, 4.52 ERA)

Porcello suffered his first loss since June after allowing five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Twins on Tuesday. While he felt his pitches were working well, it was untimely walks that hurt him.

Mets: RHP Dillon Gee (9-8, 3.60 ERA)

Gee said after his last start that he is "throwing the ball probably the best I've really ever thrown it," and the stats back that up. Since July 14, Gee is 3-1 with a 1.47 ERA. Since May 30, he is 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA.

PREVIEW

Red-hot Gee set to pose challenge for Tigers
Mets look to support right-hander against Porcello in matinee finale

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 8/24/2013 8:02 PM ET

Dillon Gee has been one of the best pitchers in baseball throughout the month of August, and he'll go against one of the top offenses in the Majors on Sunday as he tries to help the Mets avoid being swept after a 3-0 loss on Saturday.

Gee is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA, 20 strikeouts and four walks through four starts in August. In his last start, Gee allowed one unearned run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings while striking out nine and walking one.

"He had all his pitches," catcher Travis d'Arnaud said. "He was staying aggressive. His curveball was there, his slider was there -- every single pitch. He's locating his fastball. And he did an outstanding job."

Though Gee doesn't want to take all of the credit, he ranks fourth in the National League with a 1.70 ERA since the All-Star break. He's also fifth with a 0.92 WHIP.

"It helps to have the help that I've had," Gee said. "I've had great catchers calling great games. Juan [Lagares] just tracks down everything out there in center field. It helps having that. Other than that, I'm throwing the ball the best that I've probably ever thrown it."

Rick Porcello will take the mound for the Tigers, looking for his 10th win of the season. While he's pitched well for the last two months, he struggled in his last start, allowing five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Twins on Tuesday.

"My stuff I felt really good about today, but just the bottom line was not getting ahead of guys," Porcello said. "Trying to do too much with pitches early in the count. Just not being relaxed, throwing the ball down in the strike zone and getting guys to swing the bat."

Tigers: Iglesias battling soreness
Jose Iglesias didn't play in Saturday's game after being hit by a pitch just above the left elbow in the ninth inning on Friday, and soreness lingered.

"He's sore, he can't bend his arm," manager Jim Leyland said. "Hopefully he'll be OK by [Sunday], possibly -- but if we have to rest him until we get home, that's fine."

Ramon Santiago filled in at shortstop in Iglesias' place on Saturday. Iglesias is batting .454 with two doubles and three runs in his last six games.

• Leyland said Victor Martinez was physically fine after catching Friday's game, his first time behind the plate since Aug. 4, 2011, and there's a chance he could catch on Sunday.

Mets: Wright progressing through rehab
David Wright took ground balls for the first time on Friday and did some light running in the outfield before Saturday's game as he works back from a right hamstring strain.

Wright has been on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 3, and he's three weeks into the original three-to-five week timetable he was given for his recovery. Manager Terry Collins said Wright wouldn't be cleared to do full baseball activities until he can run the bases and run in a straight line with some speed.

"The one thing about the rehab, as a player and a manager, you want it to happen fast. It does not happen fast," Collins said. "There's a process involved, and we stand by our medical people, who we truly believe do a good job of managing."

• The Mets recalled Lucas Duda after he spent six weeks on the disabled list and more than two weeks with Triple-A Las Vegas. Outfielder Mike Baxter was optioned to the 51s in a corresponding move.

Worth noting
• Miguel Cabrera has reached base in 27 straight games. There have been seven such streaks of 27-plus games by American League players this season and Cabrera owns three of them.

• After Saturday's win, the Tigers improved their Interleague record to 11-5 this season, the second-best mark in the AL.
