Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (13-7, 2.61 ERA)

White Sox: LHP Jose Quintana (7-6, 3.70 ERA)

Quintana allowed three solo homers in a 3-1 loss to the Orioles on Thursday. He gave up seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. He lost for the second time in less than a week.

PREVIEW

Sanchez takes AL-leading ERA into South Side finale
Quintana goes to the hill for White Sox; Peralta to address media

By Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 9/10/2013 11:38 PM ET

The Tigers were able to extend their lead in the American League Central back to 5 1/2 games over the Indians with their 9-1 win on Tuesday, and now they will attempt to take the series from the White Sox in the rubber game on Wednesday.

Anibal Sanchez, who leads the AL with a 2.61 ERA, hasn't had a losing decision since July 19. In his last start, he gave up one run on seven hits in seven innings in a 16-2 win over the Royals on Friday.

"I felt strong today," Sanchez said. "I knew I had to make adjustments because this [Royals] team was coming in pretty hot. My team gave me a lot of runs today and I was able to do my job."

With 18 games remaining in the regular season, White Sox starters are pushing for momentum to use next year. Left-hander Jose Quintana allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings in his last start on Thursday.

"It's how they compete, how they prepare, how they go about their business, how they face adversity," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. We've talked about it before, sometimes you learn a little more of a person's makeup when there are struggles and when they are faced with a greater challenge."

There will be a moment of silence in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001, when two planes hit the World Trade Center Towers and killed nearly 3,000 people. White Sox manager Robin Ventura was playing for the Mets at the time, and remembers Shea Stadium turning into a staging area.

"The people who were in charge [in New York] and were helping out and doing stuff, the amount of work that went into it, and the planning and execution of it all is unbelievable," Ventura said. "When you're a player or you're around or know people who, New York, it kind of gets emotional."

Tigers: Peralta to begin working out with team
• Jhonny Peralta will rejoin the Tigers on Wednesday in Chicago to being working out with the team, general manager Dave Dombrowski announced Tuesday.

Dombrowski said the team hasn't made a decision whether Peralta will return to the Tigers after his 50-game suspension. Peralta is eligible to rejoin the club on Sept. 26 when Detroit faces the Marlins in the last series of the season.

"We'll make a baseball decision at some point as we get closer if we want to activate him for the regular season, and then if we're fortunate enough to make the postseason, if he's on that roster or not," Dombrowski said. "That's a decision to be made in the future."

Peralta will address his teammates and the media prior to Wednesday's game. By rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Peralta is allowed to work out with the Tigers on the field until gates open at the ballpark.

• The Tigers added left-hander Darin Downs to the bullpen on Tuesday after recalling him from Triple-A Toledo, though the Mud Hens' season ended a week ago.

"They just thought it might be good to have another lefty," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

White Sox: Manto sees progress with young hitters
• Although the White Sox offense has struggled this season, hitting coach Jeff Manto still can find positives in the team's approach.

"I look at what Conor Gillaspie did," Manto said. "First time in the big leagues for a full year, and Avisail [Garcia] having a good little run here. There's a lot of things to be positive about, although the numbers would indicate let's beat it up."

Chicago ranks third from last with 128 home runs this season, and second from the bottom with a .303 on-base percentage.

"I think we did as good of a job as we possibly could," Manto said. "We came with a lot of energy and a positive attitude. And guess what? We fell a little short, but there was a lot to build on and a lot of excitement ahead of us."

• Double-A Birmingham advanced to the Southern League championship after a 7-4 victory against Tennessee on Monday. The Barons play in the finals, beginning on Wednesday against Mobile, for the first time since 2002.

Worth noting
• The White Sox rank last in the Majors with a .980 fielding percentage, one year after leading the Majors with a franchise-record .9883 mark. The South Siders made four errors, leading to five unearned runs, on Tuesday.

• Sanchez is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in two starts against the White Sox this year.
