Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (19-3, 2.95 ERA)

Scherzer tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings in his last start. He took a no-decision despite giving up just one run on five hits, as he crossed the 200-innings plateau for the first time in his career.

White Sox: RHP Andre Rienzo (2-2, 5.04 ERA)

Rienzo has given up five earned runs in three of his last four starts, including his last outing, an 8-1 loss to the Indians. His only start vs. the Tigers was on Aug. 4, when he went six-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits in a no-decision.

PREVIEW

Chase is on for Central crown, Scherzer's 20th
White Sox can push Tigers away from clinch with Rienzo on the hill

By Cash Kruth / MLB.com | 9/19/2013 10:49 PM ET

Maybe the fifth time will finally be the charm for Max Scherzer.

The Tigers right-hander takes the ball in Friday's series opener against the White Sox at Comerica Park in search of his 20th victory of the season. He hasn't won in his last four starts -- during which he's sported a 4.70 ERA -- though he tied a season high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings of one-run ball in his last outing.

"I'm not sitting here chasing personal stuff down, I'm trying to win for the team," Scherzer said after that start. "This is all about trying to get us into the postseason. I don't care if I win another game. If we win our division, that's all that matters."

The Tigers entered Friday with a six-game lead over second-place Cleveland in the American League Central. After Detroit's 5-4 victory over the Mariners on Thursday, its magic number was cut to four.

White Sox rookie Andre Rienzo looks to stave off Scherzer's celebration for at least another day, as well as regain the form he showed in his first couple of starts. The right-hander has given up five earned runs in three of his last four starts, including his last outing, an 8-1 loss to the Indians.

Rienzo made his second career start against Detroit on Aug. 4, allowing two runs on four hits in six-plus innings. Despite an overall ERA of 5.04, the rookie has posted a 2-1 record with a 3.63 mark in six road starts, limiting opponents to a .214 average.

White Sox: Santiago still available
Left-hander Hector Santiago won't pitch this weekend in Detroit and isn't currently listed among White Sox probable pitchers through Monday. But that doesn't mean the lefty is done for the season, manager Robin Ventura said, despite Santiago's career-high 142 2/3 innings.

"He'll miss a turn if everybody is good," Ventura said. "If for some reason something comes up, then he'll probably take it. If everyone is OK, he'll get a rest."

Ventura said Santiago will get another start in 2013.

• Catcher Josh Phegley is hitting .375 with three RBIs in his last eight games, while infielder Marcus Semien is batting .391 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs over his last seven.

Tigers: Iglesias injures left hand
Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias exited Thursday's game after taking a 95-mph fastball off the left hand during the 5-4 victory over Seattle.

X-rays on the hand came back negative, and the Tigers shortstop was relieved it wasn't worse than a bruise.

"The only thing I'm concerned about is a broken hand and missing the rest of the season," Iglesias said. "It's not broken, that's a good thing and I'm happy about it."

Iglesias is listed as day to day with a left hand contusion.

Worth noting
• Chicago is 6-10 against the Tigers this season, including 2-4 at Comerica Park.

• The White Sox are batting .276 with 13 homers and a 3.22 ERA against the Tigers this season. Detroit has outscored Chicago, 68-59.

• Dayan Viciedo has had success in his career against Scherzer, going 6-for-19 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs, while Gordon Beckham has struggled against the right-hander, going 5-for-29 with nine strikeouts.

Series probables
Friday: RHP Andre Rienzo (2-2, 5.04 ERA) vs. RHP Max Scherzer (19-3, 2.95)

Saturday: LHP Chris Sale (11-13, 3.08) vs. RHP Rick Porcello (13-8, 4.45)

Sunday: RHP Erik Johnson (1-2, 2.87) vs. RHP Anibal Sanchez (14-7, 2.51)
