Game Time - 7:08 p.m. EDT

Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Justin Verlander (2-1, 2.08 ERA)

The White Sox hit Verlander well in two starts last July, pounding out 22 hits over 13 innings. He hasn't faced them since, but will get his test against their new-look lineup. He has battled early command his last two outings.

White Sox: LHP Charlie Leesman (0-0, -.-- ERA)

Chris Sale was the scheduled starter, but he will be placed on the 15-day DL prior to Tuesday's game with a flexor muscle strain in his left arm. Leesman will be called up from Triple-A to make his first start of 2014.

PREVIEW

Verlander's anticipated duel takes on different look
With Sale headed to DL, White Sox change course in Detroit

By Matt Slovin / MLB.com | 4/22/2014 12:10 AM ET

The anticipated matchup between Detroit's Justin Verlander and Chicago's Chris Sale will not come to fruition.

A flexor muscle strain landed Sale on the disabled list, general manager Rick Hahn announced after Monday's 3-1 White Sox victory. According to Hahn, an MRI showed the ligament to be structurally sound.

Sale was receiving treatment before the series opener and was not available to comment, though he is expected to address the media Tuesday. In his spot, Charlie Leesman will oppose Verlander, who labored in his last start, lasting just five innings after throwing 113 pitches.

Leesman is 0-2 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Charlotte this season. He has made just one big league start, throwing five innings of one-run ball last season against the Twins. Leesman appeared in seven games out of the bullpen for the White Sox last season.

Sale's omission is, in all likelihood, a welcome one in the Detroit clubhouse. Though Sale is just 4-4 against the Tigers for his career, he has a 3.00 ERA against them and is off to an impressive start to this season.

Meanwhile, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus deadpanned when asked what he hopes to carry over from the recent series with the Angels in which Detroit took two of three: "Mostly hoping to carry over the winning," he said.

The Tigers were unable to do that Monday night, as starter Anibal Sanchez cruised until the seventh inning, when the White Sox, who have scored the most runs in the American League this season, finally got to him.

"They've swung the bat well for sure," Ausmus said before Monday's game. "They have some power in their lineup, so it's understandable that they can score some runs. Frankly, we're hoping that we score more than they do -- that's the goal."

White Sox: Danks looking to take advantage of opportunity
Adam Eaton figures to be out of the White Sox lineup at least one more game with a mild strain in the lower part of his left hamstring, meaning another chance for Jordan Danks to start.

"I'm hoping the guys that are out come back obviously sooner rather than later," Danks said. "For the time being, I'm trying to go out there and help the ballclub.

"Honestly, I'm just hoping to get into a groove with getting some consistent at-bats. But I know with Eaton and [Avisail] Garcia out, they are looking for some big things out of me."

Danks hit in the leadoff spot and played center field Monday night at Comerica Park, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. On Sunday in Texas, the left-handed-hitting Danks launched his first homer against a southpaw out of seven career long balls. The younger Danks -- his older brother John started and won Monday's series opener -- feels ready against lefties or righties.

"As long as you are taking the same approach and tell yourself it's not any different. Obviously, lefties will do different things to you than a righty will," Danks said. "That's what baseball is all about: adjustments and being prepared. So it's just information you gotta know."

Tigers: Miggy continues work with early batting practice
Miguel Cabrera was among the Tigers hitters taking early batting practice Monday afternoon, trying to get his swing down with more repetitions. He has made progress with it over the past week, hitting more line drives to center and right field, but has struggled to translate it into hits.

Cabrera has hit the White Sox well the past three seasons after struggling against them for the first three years of his Tigers tenure. But Monday was another tough night at the plate for Cabrera as he went 0-for-4, dropping his average to .206.

Cabrera went 1-for-11 with three walks and four strikeouts during the three-game weekend series against the Angels. He has had worse April slumps, including an 0-for-21 stretch two seasons ago, but mitigated the impact by heating up immediately afterward.

Both Cabrera and Ausmus have said Cabrera physically is all right after coming off core muscle repair surgery last fall.

"I don't want to say 'I believe' -- I know Miggy's going to be fine," Ausmus said before Monday's game.

Worth noting
• Chicago's Jose Abreu is tied for second in the American League with his 18 RBIs.

• White Sox captain Paul Konerko is hitless in his last 16 at-bats after singling on the first pitch he saw this season. Konerko dropped to 1-for-7 as a pinch-hitter on Monday.

• Rajai Davis' seven stolen bases are the most in the month of April for a Tiger since Juan Encarnacion also stole seven in 1999. Detroit has stolen 16 bases this month, five shy of the number they stole in April 1999.
