Pitching matchup

Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (2-1, 2.45 ERA)

Scherzer gets a rematch against a White Sox lineup he teased for 10 strikeouts over six innings of two-run ball Thursday afternoon in Detroit. He split decisions in two starts at Chicago late last season.

White Sox: RHP Hector Noesi (0-1, 10.80 ERA)

Robin Ventura tabbed Noesi as the likely spot starter on Wednesday, as long as Noesi wasn't needed in relief Monday or Tuesday. The right-hander has made 21 starts out of his 70 career appearances, posting a 2-13 record with a 6.14 ERA.

PREVIEW

Noesi battles Scherzer in first White Sox start
Right-hander claimed off waivers on Friday; Tigers RHP seeks third win

By Joe Popely / MLB.com | 4/30/2014 12:44 AM ET

With two starters on the mend and another recently optioned to Triple-A Charlotte because of ineffectiveness, the White Sox truly are "day to day" with their rotation, as manager Robin Ventura put it.

The White Sox have tabbed right-hander Hector Noesi, who last started in 2012 for the Mariners, to square off against Max Scherzer and the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field. That's quite a tall order for Noesi, who is looking to resurrect his career after he was claimed off waivers Friday -- to go toe-to-toe with the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.

"Well, today is today, tomorrow is tomorrow," Noesi said before Tuesday's game. "For now, I don't plan anything. I just try to think and just go with it and do my stuff and make my pitches."

Once a prized prospect in the Yankees farm system, Noesi was named Player of the Month in the Dominican Winter League in November 2011 and was moved to Seattle in the Michael Pineda deal in January 2012. He struggled mightily with Seattle, going 2-12 with a 6.24 ERA in 18 starts.

Ventura said the best-case scenario is for Noesi, who is working on his mechanics with pitching coach Don Cooper, to go four or five innings.

"Well, knowing that he hasn't thrown a lot, you are not going to have him out there for seven innings," Ventura said. "Hopefully, you get five and see what happens after that. I would say five is an optimistic look."

Scherzer is 6-1 over his last 10 starts against the White Sox, eight of them quality outings. That includes six innings of two-run ball with 10 strikeouts on Thursday at Comerica Park. The White Sox will try to make some of the same adjustments against Scherzer the second time around that they did in their second meeting with Justin Verlander in Tuesday's series opener.

White Sox: Konerko happy he stuck around
Captain Paul Konerko could have easily hung up his cleats following the 2013 season. The 18-year veteran had one of his worst years statistically last season after playing through a litany of injuries.

The White Sox offense has been impressive in 2014 following a dismal 2013, making Konerko's decision to come back and play his final season as a part-time player and mentor all the sweeter.

"I'm happy," Konerko said. "To me, it's a big portion … I didn't have a crystal ball. But for me, deciding to come back for one more year, part of the story was this happening."

"This" includes a White Sox offense that leads the Majors in runs scored per game (5.56) and the club's new, young additions such as Adam Eaton, Jose Abreu and others coming into their own at the Major League level so quickly.

"It's a very young season, but you've got to start somewhere. We're not bad," Konerko said. "The way I look at it from a personal standpoint is you keep playing if you can. It's fun. Things can turn. You just keep working and working and I'm going to do everything I can every day to make sure we keep going this way.

"Everything I can do on the on the field or off the field because I definitely remember last year. I don't want guys to forget about that. I want them to remember that and have that drive us. "

Tigers: Romine filling in nicely at short
Andrew Romine is 7-for-23 with an RBI double, five walks and seven strikeouts since taking over shortstop duties, but is 1-for-10 in his last three starts.

"Romine's really done a nice job," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He's done an excellent job defensively, and he's probably provided us more offense than a lot of people expected. He's got some hits, and when he's not getting hits, he's gotten on base with a walk. So he's gotten, and he's probably going to continue to get the bulk of the playing time."

In the absence of Jose Iglesias, Romine has platooned with Danny Worth, who is 1-for-3 in two games. The team released veteran Alex Gonzalez, who hit .167 in nine games, on April 20.

Worth noting
• Hall of famer Luis Aparicio turned 80 on Tuesday. He spent 10 of his 18 seasons with the White Sox, was a 10-time All Star and was 1956 AL Rookie of the Year.

Miguel Cabrera picked up a pair of hits in Tuesday's 4-3 win, moving past Travis Fryman for 22nd on the Tigers' career hits list with 1,177.

Detroit's Victor Martinez is hitting .391 (36-for-92) in his last 24 games against the White Sox.

Joe Popely is an associate reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
