6 Runs per game lineup!
From detroittigersweblog

A couple weeks ago D-Town Baseball took the Bill James projections for 2008 and crammed them into the Baseball Musings lineup optimizer. Well, now that the Tigers lineup is drool-worthy I figured it would be worth updating.

One of popular iteration of the lineup is:

  1. Granderson
  2. Polanco
  3. Cabrera
  4. Ordonez
  5. Sheffield
  6. Guillen
  7. Renteria
  8. Rodriguez
  9. Jones

Such a lineup would yield 5.831 runs per game. Tantalizing. Even the worst ordering of players (Pudge leading off) would produce 5.601 runs per game. The best lineup you ask? That would be 5.970 runs per game. As for the configuration - and I know this would never happen - is:

  1. Sheffield
  2. Cabrera
  3. Polanco
  4. Granderson
  5. Ordonez
  6. Jones
  7. Guillen
  8. Rodriguez
  9. Renteria

Regardless it’s a substantial upgrade from what Eric had found earlier where the lineups ranged from 5.224 to 5.578 runs per game.

My kind of post! I wish I could manage, I WOULD go with that "most ideal" lineup. Since that's not conventional, here's mine:

Granderson
Polanco
Ordonez
Cabrera
Sheffield
Guillen
Renteria
Jones
Rodriguez

Also, we need 6.17 runs per game! I want 1000 runs!

This is a fun thought. If everyone matched their career highs (I'm dreaming, but still), we could really be crazy:

7.166 runs per game!! That's 1160 runs!

2003 Tigers gave up 928 runs. Score 1160 and give up 928 and you'll be expected to go 97-65.

Our pitching is nowhere near 2003 bad! Last year we gave up 797 runs.

Let's be more realistic and say we score the 944 runs the original post is projecting and give up 797 we'd go 93-69. That will probably get us in the playoffs. If we can up the ante to 1000 runs we'll win 98 games allowing 797 runs.

(All those W-L projections are based on the Pythagorean W-L estimator).

With this group of batters we can look at an average of 5.612 to 5.970 runs per game! No matter how you mix them up! applaud

So, basically you can't screw up the lineup?

I don't think so! Just don't rest Cabrera for days at a time to play Inge!

Definitely a WORST CASE scenario!! lol

Tigers' Leyland juggles lineup options
Lynn Henning / The Detroit News

How will Jim Leyland manage what appears to be an abundance of offensive talent in 2008?

There's still plenty of time for the Tigers manager to decide ahead of the season opener against Kansas City on March 31 at Comerica Park.

He must somehow figure out where to ideally place in his order the likes of Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco, Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Guillen, Edgar Renteria, Jacque Jones and Pudge Rodriguez.

"Everybody's making way too much of it," Leyland said this week as he prepared to join the team for this weekend's TigerFest and for the caravan that hits the road Sunday. "It's pretty obvious how it looks. I don't think it's going to be anything mind-boggling.

"Everybody in Detroit pretty much has the same lineup I have."

Leyland understands that most armchair managers will have center fielder Granderson at leadoff, followed by second baseman Polanco.

Batting third will be either the incumbent, Sheffield (designated hitter), or Cabrera, the 24-year-old slugging third baseman. Ordonez (right field) should remain at cleanup, with either Cabrera or Sheffield batting fifth, at least on most days.

Guillen, who is moving to first base, most likely will be Leyland's regular choice at the sixth spot. The team's new shortstop, Renteria, is expected to bat seventh, just ahead of Jones, the new left fielder, and two spots ahead of Rodriguez, Detroit's catcher who will assume the unusual status of being a No. 9 hitter destined for the Hall of Fame.

"There's no secret to it," Leyland said of his batting order, which some observers believe is capable of producing 1,000 runs in 2008, an astounding number only seven big-league teams have reached in a single season. "I just haven't made a decision yet on how I'm going to hit those three guys in the middle. I'm not sure about that yet."
