Timo Perez re-signs with Tigers; Brandon Inge trade talks

December 11, 2007
By JON PAUL MOROSI
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Outfielder Timo Perez has elected to remain with the Tigers, by signing a one-year major-league contract worth a maximum of $525,000.

The deal is similar in structure to those signed by Detroit infielder Ramon Santiago and relief pitcher Francisco Cruceta earlier this off-season. It includes a partial guarantee – $150,000, in Perez’s case – and a spot on the 40-man roster.

Perez was designated for assignment along with Chris Shelton on Nov. 30, in order to clear roster spots for Cruceta and left-hander Kenny Rogers. The club outrighted Perez to the minor leagues late last week and subsequently re-signed him.

Perez, 32, was a pleasant surprise for the Tigers this past season. He earned two call-ups to Detroit and came up to stay when Gary Sheffield went on the disabled list in late August. Perez, a left-handed hitter, batted .389 with no home runs and 13 RBIs in 29 games.

Unless he is traded before then, Perez should enter spring training with a chance to make Detroit’s big-league club in a reserve role.

With Perez’s return, the Tigers’ 40-man roster is temporarily full – pending decisions regarding five arbitration-eligible players on Wednesday.

TIGERS, PIRATES TALKING:

The Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates discussed Detroit third baseman Brandon Inge over the last several days, but it’s not clear if the sides have made any progress toward a deal.

Inge lost his job as the Tigers’ starting third baseman following the acquisition of Miguel Cabrera last week. He has informed Detroit officials that he would rather become another team’s starting third baseman than accept a reserve role with the Tigers.

“It takes pitching, hitting and defense. Any two can win. All three make you unbeatable.”

Perez (Tmo) has very little shot of making the big club, unless Thames actually gets traded for a solid reliever.

If so, I hope Grilli goes too!!
