OLD FASHION CHRISTMAS CUT-OUT BUTTER COOKIES

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs, well beaten
1/2 tsp salt
4 cups sifted flour

Cream butter, add sugar and vanilla and continue creaming in mixer until light. Beat eggs and add to butter mixture. Blend well. Sift flour, measure 4 cups, sift with salt and gradually add to dough in mixer. Chill 20 to 30 minutes. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out with cookie cutter, place on lightly greased cookie sheet, decorate with colored sugars and/or sprinkles as desired. Cook in 400 degree oven 8 to 10 minutes until light brown.

I made a double batch today. To me, it is not christmas without these cookies! We have used this recipe since abt 1969.

These things taste awful and suck to decorate, but like you said, it's not Christmas without them!

I don't think this recipe tastes bad. I have tried several different ones and this is the one I liked best. With sprinkled sugars, they are easy to decorate.

We decorate them with frosting and sprinkles and other weird things. I just don't like them, they need something other than sugar and flour. They need nuts or chocolate or cinnamon or coconut or something!

Can't have Christmas without the cutout cookies! I have mine made, but not decorated yet.
