| I opened the latest issue of Sports Illustrated this morning and was pleased to see an entire section on the contributions of Latino athletes. I haven't read all the articles, but they seemed overall very positive.
There was also a two-page spread showcasing the highest paid Latinos in sports. For each athlete, there was a picture and a little blurb about their accomplishments. However, when I got to #16, our beloved Maggs, the feature took a disturbingly negative tone.
There was a nice picture of our star. But the copy next to it read something like this (I don’t have the exact article with me right now):
“In his native Venezuela, Ordonez owns a construction company that reportedly has ties to the leftist government.”
This infuriated me for several reasons. The publication totally ignored the fact that Magglio won the AL batting championship last year and finished in the top five again this year. The writers overlooked the good deeds that got Magglio nominated for the Clemente award, most notably his establishment of a scholarship for inner city kids in Detroit. Instead, the writers elected to highlight a tidbit of information that is, at best, HEARSAY. They chose to include this highly political anecdote in a SPORTS magazine. The other athletes featured all had trivia about their accomplishments in SPORTS.
I am angry and plan on sending a letter to the magazine. I’d like to encourage you all to do the same. _________________

| Why does Magglio own a Construction Company with ties to the Government?
Granted; I don't think it was fair to just take a negative shot at Maggs
But i did not know that about Maggs
Maggs is cool
But it is disturbing to read that fact about him |

| my point is the Venezuelan government has its hand in everything down there as it is! You can't NOT have ties to the government! _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. | Hmmm, it's a double negative...I'll try again:
You are unable to be without ties to the government down there as it is a socialist state. _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball. The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit. ~Al Gallagher, 1971 |

Reportedly makes journalism fun though! Watch....
Alex Rodriguez was reportedly arrested for the murder of three people. Justin Verlander was reportedly found sleeping in a ditch last night. Mike Maroth is reportedly close to a 10 year, $250 million deal with the Giants.
See! It turns out the guy that gives me my info sucks, but it's still reportable! _________________ Coming soon: A better signature! |

The Detroit Tigers are reportedly making plans to build a statue of Todd Jones and retire his number before the 2009 Home Opener

No, I don't think so. They were just using that as an anecdote about him. Seems to me they could've found something better and less controversial to say. _________________

| The game is controversial enough! They don't need to dig up unnecessary things about players, even though they do. _________________ There are three things in my life which I really love: God, my family, and baseball.
