| I would absolutely love to see the following broken, even though Lolich is one of my all time favorate Tigers!
| Quote: | Fifteen-or-more strikeouts: - Mickey Lolich (15) - 10/2/72 vs. BOS |
I looked on Detroits website and Lolich has the record of 16 SO in a game twice:
| Most Strikeouts -- 16 | Mickey Lolich Mickey Lolich | vs. CAL vs. SEA | 5/23/1969 6/09/1969 |

Yeah, 15 isn't actually all that many for a team record. _________________ Coming soon: A better signature! |

It is hard to believe it has held since 1972. I am sure Fidrych was close to breaking it, but he is one of the last pitchers the Tigers had that could go up to 11 innings in one game.
Edit- 9 SO was Marks highest in one game in 1977.

Here's a super crazy fact. Before I attempt to explain the play (I have no idea how it happened) think about it.
The Tigers once turned a 3U TP (that's how I'd score it - I suppose you could write L3-3U-3U TP or something instead). Anyways, the Tigers once turned an unassisted triple play by the first basemen. How in the world would that happen?
| Spoiler: | | | My guess Runners on first and second (maybe 3rd - irrelevant). There are no outs (obviously). The first basemen is playing some very strange shift and is where 2B should be. A ball is lined at him and the runners are all going. He catches the line drive (1 out), tags the runner who was on first base (2 outs) and tags second base before the runner on second gets back (3 outs - triple play). That still seems very strange. First basemen don't tend to cover first base. |
Wait, nevermind - I found the play. Johnny Nuen turned an unassisted triple play on May 31, 1927 in the 9th inning. My guess above is how it actually happened.
Unassisted triple plays (there have been 13) have been turned by a few positions: 8 by shortstops 3 by 2Bmen 2 by 1Bmen 0 by anyone else (the only other position that seems even remotely possible would be 3B).
More on triple plays - see here for a list of every triple play ever turned (you'll need to know what player is what number (pitcher is 1, etc.). The * denotes an out.
The 10 most common are as follows (number of occurrences in parentheses): 5*-4*-3* (72) 6*-4*-3* (52) 4*-6*-3* (42) 3*-3*-6* (36) 6*-6*-3* (25) 4*-3*-6* (18) 1*-6*-3* (16) 4*-4*-3* (16) 6-4*-3*-2* (14) 5*-5*-3* (10)
The most common TP ever turned (happened once)? Probably this: 6-2-5-1-5*-4*-5-6-5-7*
That means ground ball to the shortstop. Throw to 2nd but the throw is not in time. Throw to third but the throw is too late. Throw to the pitcher who throws back to third and gets the runner in a rundown. Throw to 2nd to get the hitter (who tried to advance to 2nd on the ground ball). Now throw to third to try and get the other runner (he's now in a rundown). Throw to the shortstop then back to the third basemen and then throw to the left fielder who tags him out. Confused? _________________ Coming soon: A better signature! |

Nevermind - you already looked it up. I was going to say I doubt Fidrych came close - he never struck anybody out. Just 97 in 250 innings. That's about as low a K/9 IP ratio as you'll ever see. _________________ Coming soon: A better signature! |

And he was the last one to do it on 7/27/07 @LAA!

We can add another one! 6/21/08 by (who else?) Marcus Thames! _________________ "I'm glad we're in the other division," Terry Francona, manager of the East-winning Boston Red Sox, told the Associated Press. "That lineup just got scary." |
