| What I can't figure out is why they are even playing at 6:00. How come it's not 7:00 across the league? (7:05 if you want to get technical).

It is stupid
But there are teams that like 6:05 starts
The Twins and White Sox play them;
I think the A's and Giants do sometimes
Then again it gets dark at night earlier in those cities
Detroit being on the Western Edge of EST is like Norway in summer
